Abstract
Present generation wireless networks have been designed considering voice as the primary traffic. After the advent of the Internet era, demand for high data traffic over mobile networks is increasing. Third generation standards are proposed to meet the increasing data traffic demand over mobile networks. The third generation CDMA standards are called Wideband CDMA because of their wider access bandwidth and are proposed to meet varying traffic rates. To support multiple bit rate traffic, power allocation at the base station becomes vital. This paper deals with the problem of resource allocation in the forward link for Wideband CDMA networks. It has been shown that static algorithm for power allocation is most suited for voice traffic whereas dynamic power allocation strategy with buffers for data at the base station are desirable for data traffic.
