Mriganka Sur
Mriganka Sur is the Sherman Fairchild Professor of Neuroscience and Head of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his BTech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (1974), and his MS (1975) and PhD (1978) from Vanderbilt University. After postdoctoral research at SUNY-Stony Brook and a faculty appointment at Yale University School of Medicine, Professor Sur joined the faculty of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT (1986). He was named full Professor in 1993, associate department head in 1994, and department head in 1997. Professor Sur studies the function, development and plasticity of the cerebral cortex of the brain, using experimental and computational approaches. His laboratory has discovered fundamental principles by which networks of the cerebral cortex are wired and process visual information. He is the author of 150 publications, serves on the board of major journals, and has delivered over 200 lectures world-wide. He has received many awards and honors, including the Meghnad Saha Award, the Sloan Fellowship, the McKnight Development Award, the Distinguished Overseas Lectureship of the Australian Neuroscience Society, the Sigma Xi Distinguished Lectureship, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, India; the Neurosciences Research Program, USA; the Rodin Academy, Sweden; and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Jayadeva
