A Comparative Study Between the PI and SM Controllers Used by Nonlinear Control of Induction Motor Fed by SVM Matrix Converter

Abstract

This paper presents a nonlinear feedback control of the induction motor drive system fed by a matrix converter controlled by a direct space vector strategy. The nonlinear feedback control is an approach privileged, which allows achieving a decoupled control while ensuring a perfect linearization regardless of the profiles of the reference trajectories imposed. In this context, a sliding mode controller has been developed taking the place of the conventional PI controller, in order to improve the performance of the proposed drive system regarding decoupling, pursuit of imposed reference trajectories, and the fast dynamic responses. Moreover, to minimize the harmonic rate injected by the drive system into the grid, a damped RLC input filter was placed upstream with the matrix converter. Finally, a comparison study between the PI and SMC was carried out by simulation. The obtained results clearly indicate the effectiveness of the SMC over the PI controller at different operating conditions, such as load disturbance and speed reversal.

Abdelhakim Dendouga was born in Kimel, Batna, Algeria, in 1976. He received the MSc degree in electrical engineering from the University of Batna, Algeria, in 2004. Currently, he is an associate professor at the Electrical Engineering Institute, University of Biskra, Algeria. His current area of research includes control of induction machine, doubly fed induction machine, power converter and renewable energy.
