Model Predictive Control of Grid-Connected Wind Energy Conversion System

ABSTRACT

Wind power technology can contribute to the distribution system by regulating its active power output to enhance the system reliability. Additionally, it could be economically beneficial to improve voltage quality as well as load sharing with generation at various times, avoiding load shedding and risk of potential blackouts. However, output power of the wind turbine system is variable in nature and it is difficult to export this power into the distribution system without having any appropriate control strategy. To address this issue, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy has been proposed to regulate the voltage of the feeder to balance sinusoid and for power flow control, a reference phase angle delta is generated which maintains power balance at grid terminal during wind and load variations. Effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is investigated using MATLAB/Simulink simulation studies and a hardware design of a single-phase distribution system using dSPACE platform.

He received his BTech degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, India in 2009 and MTech degree from Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow, India in 2015. He is pursuing his PhD degree in electrical engineering fromShri RamswaroopMemorial University, Lucknow, India. R. S. Bajpai

R S Bajpai was born in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India in 1963. He received his BTech degree in electrical engineering from Institution of Engineers (India) Kolkata in 1995, MTech and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from MNNIT Allahabad, India in 2003 and 2013, respectively. He was an engineer with IndianAir Force and served there in the field of power generation and distribution to telecommunication and radar centers. Presently, he is serving as a professor in electrical engineering in SRM University, Lucknow, India. His current research interests include power converters, photovoltaic systems, wind energy systems and application of power converters to power systems. He was awarded Dr P S Nigam Power Sector award from Institution of Engineers (India) in 2007, best technical paper during proceedings of International Conference “MS07”,Kolkata, India in 2008 and contribution toward seamless power transfer to communication and radar equipment's in Indian Air Force in 1998.
