Design and Analysis of Microstrip Antenna on Periodic and Non-Periodic Photonic Band Gap Substrate

Abstract

This paper describes the investigation of a microstrip patch antenna with periodic and non-periodic Photonic Band Gap structure (PBG) as a substrate. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at 5.9 GHz. The problem of surface wave leakage in the conventional antenna is controlled by producing dielectric periodicity with the help of photonic crystal as a substrate. Parametric analysis of the proposed antenna is carried out by including the photonic crystal substrate with an optimized air hole diameter as 1, 1.5, and 2.5 mm. It is observed that the gain, directivity, and the S parameters of the proposed microstrip patch antenna are improved compared to the conventional patch antenna.

Taksala Devapriya Amalraj has received BE degree in electronics and communication engineering and ME degree in communication systems from Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She has more than 10 years of experience in teaching and her research interests include microwave antenna, frequency selective surfaces.

Robinson Savarimuthu

S Robinson was born in Tamil Nadu, India in 1982. He received BE degree in electronics and communication engineering from Bharathidasan University, Tamilnadu, India and ME degree in optical communication from Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi, Tamilnadu, India, in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He completed PG Dipp. VLSI and MBA (Human Resource Management) in Annamalai University in the year 2009 and 2010, respectively. He completed his Doctoral Degree in Department of Electronics Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology, Pondicherry University, Puducherry in 2013. He is currently working as professor and head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukkottai, Tamilnadu, India. He has published over 100 papers in international journals and also presented over 100 papers in international and national conferences in India and foreign countries. He published one book and four book chapters. He has given various invited talks, guest lecture, and keynote address in seminar, workshop and conferences in India and foreign countries. He is the reviewer around 25 referred journals like IEEE, SPIE, Elsevier, Springer and PIER Journals. He is a life member of ISTE, IETE, CSI, IE(I) and member of IEEE. He attended 50 workshops and organized 20 programmes. His current research interests are in the areas of optical communication, photonic crystals, photonic integrated circuits, optical devices, microwave communication, microwave devices, electromagnetic radiation, and optical networks.
