Analysis and Design of Compressive Pulsed Radar Based on Adaptive Pipelined Algorithm

Abstract

Nowadays, applying the theory of compressive sensing in radar systems based on the traditional Complex Approximate Message Passing (CAMP) algorithm has many advantages such as; memory size, used lower sampling rate, and low hardware complexity compared with other techniques, and consequently lower processing time. In this paper, an analysis of the adaptive CAMP algorithm is illustrated for pulsed radar signals depending on the adaptive CAMP threshold. The performance of the proposed adaptive CAMP algorithm is compared with that of the traditional one with respect to detection performance using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, resolution in range, and the possible number of detected targets. Design and implementation of the proposed algorithm are achieved using FPGA based on parallel and pipeline processes which has a good effect in processing time enhancement and consequently reduction in hardware complexity compared with the traditional algorithm.

Sameh Ghanem received the PhD degree in signal processing and radar system engineering from Military Technical College (MTC), Egypt, in 2015. From 2015 to 2019, he was a senior engineer with Technical Research of Electronics Technology in MTC. Since 2019, he has been an assistant professor in Egyptian Academy for Engineering and Advanced Technology (EAEAT), Cairo, Egypt. His current research interests include radar system engineering, signal processing, signal detection and estimation, and compressive sensing.

Fathy A. Abdel Kader

Fathy A A Kader received the PhD degree in signal processing and radar system engineering from Military Technical College (MTC), Egypt, in 2007. From 2007 to 2008, he was a senior engineer with Technical Research of Electronics Technology in MTC. He was appointed as assistant professor in the field of signal processing and radar systems since 2015. He was a head of Radar Department of Military Technical College in 2017 till now. His current research interests include radar system engineering, signal processing, signal detection and estimation, hardware implementation using FPGA, and compressive sensing.
