An Efficient MPC-based Droop Control Strategy for Power Sharing in a Hybrid AC/DC Microgrid Using Renewable Energy Resources

 

Abstract

A hybrid microgrid is an efficient technique to integrate renewable energy resources and allow energy exchange between ac and dc subgrids. Pf and QV droop controls are commonly employed in microgrid to deliver power demands while preserving voltage and frequency restrictions via interlinking converter (IC). When a microgrid is powered by renewable energy sources, due to the prevalence of impedance conflict traditional droop techniques offer an inappropriate response in power sharing. This study employs a predictive-based control scheme to ensure appropriate power sharing between both subgrids in the event of imbalancing on either side. Photovoltaic systems, battery storage, and a synchronous generator powered by wind turbines constitute a microgrid, which is connected via an interlinking converter. The MPC MPPT-based control approach dynamically dispatches power generated by wind and solar energy sources to the loads connected throughout the hybrid microgrid. The proposed control technique maintains power exchange between hybrid microgrids within an acceptable range, according to simulation and experimental results.

R. S. Bajpai

R S Bajpai was born in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India in 1963. He received BTech degree in electrical engineering from the Institution of Engineers (India) Kokata in 1995, MTech and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from MNNIT Allahabad, India in 2003 and 2013 respectively. He was an engineer with Indian Air Force and served the field of power generation and distribution to telecommunication and radar centers. Presently, he is serving as a professor electrical engineering in SRM University, Lucknow, India. His current research interests include power converters, photovoltaic systems, wind energy systems and application of power converters to power systems. He was awarded Dr. P.S. Nigam Power Sector Award from the Institution of Engineers (India) in 2007, best technical paper during proceedings of International Conference “MS07”, Kolkata, India in 2008 for his contribution towards seamless power transfer to communication & radar equipment's in Indian Air Force in 1998.
