Notes

1. “Toute la pédagogie médiévale est à la base de lecture de textes, et la scolastique universitaire institutionnalise et amplifie ce type de travail” [All medieval pedagogy is based on the reading of texts, and the scholastic university institutionalized and expanded upon this type of work].

2. It consists in a “mouvement de transmission et de reactivation permanents qui, de centres en centres et de siècles en siècles, a permis à la philosophie de survivre à ses morts successives” [a movement of ongoing transmission and renewal that, from place to place and from century to century, allowed philosophy to survive a series of successive deaths].

3. This was the motto of the Enlightenment.

4. Certain disciplines never detached themselves from philosophy in order to shield themselves with the name: ‘human sciences’ and ‘social sciences’?

5. This is what the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein called Übersicht.

6. “Le plus haut degré l'intèriorité chez un sujet existant, c'est la passion, passion à laquelle correspond la vérité en tant que passion”.
