Axiological Horizons of the European Identity and Their Impact on the University

Pages 381-390 | Published online: 18 May 2010

Abstract

The European axiological community, which was described in the past as Christianitas, united the rational reflection of ancient Greece, the Roman commitment to law, and the paradox of the Gospel of love, with its ultimate revelation of God's solidarity with humankind in the drama of Calvary. The article describes the role of medieval universities in shaping the cultural unity of Europe. Presenting new cultural challenges of our epoch it fosters new efforts to protect academy ecology. These efforts should unite all members of the Academy who are concerned about the future of European culture and eager to promote humanism in its classical version.

Notes

1. When describing in detail the role of particular cultures John Paul II referred to contributions of the Celtic people as well as of the German, Slavic, Fino‐Ugric, Jewish, and Muslim world (Ecclesia in Europa, Citation2003, 19).
