European Universities: Their Cultural Legitimacy and Their Role in the Construction of Europe

Abstract

This article describes the historical and religious roots of the European university, and draws parallels of their development in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam as well as their interaction in the past, which provide a background for cultural and religious encounters, namely in the context of student mobility today.
