Abstract
This article focuses on the external dimension of the European space for higher education: what is being done to create greater cooperation among higher education institutions in Europe and why it is essential to set this process in the wider context of development and globalisation. An emphasis is put on the role of education as ‘a powerful tool in the powerless’ hands’ for the future of economies, societies and people's lives.
