Abstract
The classical university is under attack because of the perception that it has not kept pace with technological advances in society and that it no longer serves societal needs. Therefore, as the argument goes, the university must change. This article, that is divided into two main parts, tackles these issues. The first part is a brief presentation of Cyprus and of its higher education system. The second part is a presentation of three dilemmas facing higher education: general versus specialized higher education, elite versus mass higher education, and the financing of higher education.
