Abstract
The midgut in sexuals and workers of Bombus terrestris (L.), in fertile females of Megabombus ruderatus (Fab.) and workers of M. pascuorum (Scop.) and M. sylvarum (L.) has been observed with TEM and SEM. Epithelial cells were bordered with apically tapered, unusually long, and thickly packed microvilli, whose length reached 15 μm in B. terrestris males and 35 μm in B. terrestris fertile females and workers, 12 μm in M. ruderatus and M. pascuorum, and 4 μm in M sylvarum. The basal diameter varied between 70 and 120 nm in the different species.
