Traditional Versus Modern Agriculture: A Study of Peasant Farming in Ceylon (Sri Lanka)

Pages 68-77 | Published online: 08 Aug 2017

Abstract

The tobacco farming system of Jaffna Peninsula, Ceylon, is analyzed from the standpoint of its material and behavioral elements. It is shown that the peasants behave in an economically rational manner and have successfully modified the environment to permit intensive cropping, using traditional methods of farming. Changes in the demand for strong-flavored tobacco have witnessed substitution of specialty truck crops as an alternative to the adoption of new agricultural factors of production associated with cigarette tobacco cultivation.
