Abstract

“Had the Temple been in existence, I would have stood there with my brethren, the singers, and recited the Song of the Levites. But since the Temple is still in ruins, and we have neither Priests serving nor Levites singing there, I am dedicated to a study of the Torah and the Prophets, the Mishna and the Agadah, the commentaries and the glossaries, the meaning of the Torah itself and the meaning of those who probed into its depths. When I ponder all this, I feel very sad that of all our past glory only the chronicles remain. This sadness penetrates my heart and causes me to tell tales—like the man who was exiled from his father's house. He goes and builds himself a hut, sits in it and tells all comers about the splendid place he used to live in”.

Thus Agnon on his destiny as a writer.
