Abstract

On June 19, 1979, Dr. Nahum Goldmann addressed the B'nai Brith First Lodge of England at the special invitation of its president, Mr. Gerald Baron Cohen. Among the distinguished audience were leading figures of the Community and among the guests of honour sharing the top table were the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Imanuel Jakobovits, who responded to Dr. Goldmann's address; a representative of the Israel Embassy; Mr. Fred Worms, a former President of the B'nai Brith Lodge, and others.

In his address Dr. Goldmann covered a wide range of topics which he presented with his usual wit, spiced with numerous anecdotes relating to his personal experiences during his many decades in public life. Even those familiar with Dr. Goldmann's independent and non-conformist outlook were surprised at some of the views he expressed on this occasion, which threw a new light on recent developments in Israel, even though he avoided dealing directly with the present situation there. The brief exchange of views between the speaker and the Chief Rabbi, which followed the address, rounded off an inspiring evening which will stay in the memory of those who were privileged to be present.

We are glad to be able to present a lengthy extract from Dr. Goldmann's address by agreement with the B'nai Brith Lodge and the full approval of the speaker, who has authorised the transcript.
