Abstract
A review of limnology in Bangladesh, spanning more than 25 years, is presented. The country has a rich array of aquatic resources including streams, rivers, beels, haors, baors, reservoirs and ponds. Research work that has been undertaken on physicochemical limnology and phytoplankton ecology (community composition, abundance and seasonality) is summarized, and quantitative and qualitative studies of the limnological factors affecting a wide range of aquatic organisms are discussed. Human influences on inland waters — which have been increasing — are described, and the facilities available for limnological research, training and education are listed. An attempt has been made to identify the major limnological problems facing Bangladesh, and to indicate some possible solutions.
