Thomas E. Linton

Thomas E. Linton, Ph.D., is honored as our outstanding special educator in the field of emotional disturbance. Dr. Linton graduated from the University of Michigan in the late 1950s and has been actively involved in teaching, research, and developing innovative re-educational programs for severely disturbed children and youth in Wisconsin, Canada, and Illinois. He also is an outspoken advocate for the forgotten and condemned students in our schools. This view is splendidly expressed in his books written with J. Nelson, Patterns of Power: The Social Foundation of Education and Radical Ideas in Schools. Dr. Linton was convinced that the medical/clinical model of treatment was not an effective or benevolent experience for troubled children and youth. As a result, for 20 years Dr. Linton was a proponent of the “Educateur Model” of training and believed that this model was best reflected in Nicholas Hobbs's reeducation program.
