The Mechanism of Adhesive Wear of Copper Under Boundary Lubrication

Abstract

A relationship was obtained between the fraction of total load supported by metal junctions in boundary lubrication and the apparent contact pressure. From this relationship, equations were developed for the wear-rate and friction coefficient. The wear-rate equation contains two parameters: Ph, the critical pressure of hydrodynamic lubrication, and σ, the probability that a metal-metal junction will result in a wear particle.

The friction equation proposed also contains Ph. Experimental data obtained using a pin-on-disk-type friction machine were in agreement with the proposed model.
