Cutting Oil Performance—A Significant New Machining Test

Pages 171-177 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

A new basic bi-dimensional cutting test, which deals with the major concerns of cutting fluid users, was developed: it consists of a parting operation carried out at constant cutting speed, on a lathe equipped with a DC-driven spindle.

Cutting oil performance is evaluated with respect to three criteria:

(1) the tool life time,

(2) the tool/chip friction factor,

(3) the specific cutting energy.

The complete test equipment and test procedure are described.

Typical results related to existing cutting oils are discussed.
