Abstract
This paper presents a detailed study of the theoretical performance characteristics of symmetric and tilted four-lobed journal bearings. The results are presented in the form of charts which provide a direct comparison of the performance characteristics of various configurations.
The overall performance of the symmetric and tilted bearings has been evaluated on the basis of static as well as the dynamic performance characteristics. It has been shown that compared to a symmetric bearing, a suitably titled bearing exhibits superior static performance in the entire range of bearing exhibits superior static performance in the entire range of bearing operation, and possess fairly good dynamic performance characteristics, especially in the lightly loaded region.
