On Prediction of Wear Coefficients in Sliding Wear

Pages 360-366 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

The wear rates and wear coefficients of metals are analytically predicted based on the delamination theory of wear when the wear rates are controlled by the subsurface crack propagation rate. The wear rate and the wear coefficient are predicted to be directly proportional to the depth of crack location and the crack growth rate. The numerical values of wear coefficients are obtained through finite element analysis of crack propagation in elastoplastic solids. The agreement between typical experimental results and theoretical prediction is excellent.
