Feed-Pressure Flow in Plain Journal Bearings

&
Pages 381-392 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

This paper provides a quick and readily available method for predicting feed-pressure flow in a journal bearing. A comprehensive feed-pressure flow equation, obtained by judiciously curve-fitting a vast amount of predicted dimensionless flow data, is presented, which:

a.

considers any rectangular grooving at any position in the bearing,

b.

considers any journal eccentricity and angular position of the journal center,

c.

takes into account the variation of film thickness at the groove.

This equation forms the focal point of the paper and is in fair agreement with computed results from an accurate finite difference model.

Feed-pressure flow-prediction charts are presented for a selection of the more common forms of groove arrangement.
