Abstract
This paper provides a quick and readily available method for predicting feed-pressure flow in a journal bearing. A comprehensive feed-pressure flow equation, obtained by judiciously curve-fitting a vast amount of predicted dimensionless flow data, is presented, which:
a. | considers any rectangular grooving at any position in the bearing,
b. | considers any journal eccentricity and angular position of the journal center,
c. | takes into account the variation of film thickness at the groove. |
This equation forms the focal point of the paper and is in fair agreement with computed results from an accurate finite difference model.
Feed-pressure flow-prediction charts are presented for a selection of the more common forms of groove arrangement.
