Space Shuttle Large-Format Camera Coverage over Canada: A Review of the Mission and the Photographs Acquired

Pages 162-169 | Published online: 01 Aug 2014

SUMMARY

During October 1984, the United States Space Shuttle Challenger carried a large-format cartographic camera into space for an engineering evaluation that took an excellent set of high-resolution photographs of limited areas worldwide with 225 frames exposed over parts of Canada. The results of this experiment (for both worldwide and Canadian coverage) are reviewed. The coverage of Canada, the number of photographs taken, and the films used are all reviewed in detail. The quality of the photographs of Canada is discussed, and several present and anticipated uses are reviewed. Some examples of the photographs of Canada are reproduced to illustrate the characteristics of the photography.
