SUMMARY
Two methods are compared for converting low-altitude airborne radiance to reflectance in the absence of ground-truth data: transformation using a simple radiative transfer model, which is fitted with LOWTRAN7 simulation data; and normalization by a simultaneous, spectrally-coherent downwelling irradiance signal provided by a rooftop diffuser. Both are fast enough to use on a large number of hyperspectral samples. Reflectances obtained from samples of Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) radiance data are within 15 percent of ground-truth over the spectral intervals considered. This figure is approximately equivalent to the uncertainty associated with the experiment. The normalized reflectance stays within this tolerance at low altitude even under an overcast sky. Modelling of the spectral characteristics of the instrument and its influence on the calculated reflectances are discussed.
