SUMMARY
Calibration of image data using the empirical line technique requires that the spectral reflectance of pseudo-invariant features (pifs) be estimated over the same spatial scale as the image data to be calibrated. This means that the radiometric scene elements comprising the pif need to be identified, their spectral reflectance integrated across the same bandwidths as the remote sensor, and their areal contribution to the composite signal accounted for. Although the areal extent of some elements may be small, their spectral contribution may be significant, especially for low reflectance pifs such as asphalt surfaces. Results from an experiment in Alberta, Canada show a proportionate increase of up to 12% in the spatially averaged spectral reflectance of an asphalt parking lot due to the presence of painted lines on the surface.
