Fostering self-determination and sense of belonging through leisure education: reflections on the Steps to Connect program

Abstract

This article describes the development, implementation, evaluation, and evolution of a leisure education program named Steps to Connect. Originally designed to be a recreation-based extension of chronic disease self-management interventions in community environments, the overall purpose of Steps to Connect was to help participants explore how recreation can help them live well with their health conditions. Drawing from seven program implementations, post-program surveys (n = 25) and interviews (n = 15) with program participants highlighted that the program’s value was less to do with managing health problems, and more about providing them with opportunities to experience activities that fostered self-reflection and personal growth as well as to experience a greater sense of connection to others and their communities. In this article, the authors revisit the theoretical underpinnings of the program to explore what Steps to Connect is really about.

Cet article décrit le développement, la mise en œuvre, l’évaluation et l’évolution d’un programme d’éducation aux loisirs, nommé « Steps to Connect ». Initialement conçu pour enrichir, de façon récréative, des interventions d’autogestion des maladies chroniques dans des environnements communautaires, l’objectif général de Steps to Connect était d’aider les participants à explorer comment les loisirs peuvent les aider à vivre bien avec leurs états de santé. À partir de sept implémentations du programme, les enquêtes post-programme (n = 25) et les entretiens (n = 15) avec les participants au programme ont mis en évidence que la valeur du programme se trouve moins dans la gestion des problèmes de santé et plus dans l’occasion fournie aux participants d’essayer des activités favorisant l’autoréflexion et la croissance personnelle, ainsi que d’éprouver un plus grand sentiment de connexion aux autres et à leurs propres communautés. Dans cet article, les auteurs reviendront sur les fondements théoriques du programme pour en explorer le vrai sens.
