An objective analysis of the low‐frequency currents in the Strait of Georgia

Abstract

Time series of streamfunction maps at the depths of 100 and approximately 290 m in the Strait of Georgia are produced by the method of objective analysis to show the temporal evolution of the low‐frequency (period ≥5 days) flow field. In the current fluctuations there is clear evidence for the formation of eddies. The maps are used to estimate the importance of non‐geostrophic effects in local dynamics. Estimates of the Rossby number show that inertial accelerations can be important, although they do not dominate the dynamical balance. The vorticity dynamics of the low‐frequency fluctuations are found to be highly non‐linear, with advection dominating the vorticity balance. The implications of these results for successful modelling of low‐frequency motion in the Strait of Georgia are discussed.

Résumé

On utilise la méthode de l'analyse objective pour dresser les cartes des séries temporelles des fonctions de courant pour les niveaux de 100 et environ de 290 m dans le détroit de Georgia pour étudier l'évolution temporelle du champ de l'écoulement de basse fréquence (période ≥ 5 jours). Les fluctuations du courant révèlent clairement la formation de tourbillons. Les cartes sont utilisées pour estimer l'importance des effets non‐géostrophiques de la dynamique locale. Les estimations du nombre de Rossby montrent que les inerties des accélérations peuvent être importantes, quoiqu'elles ne dominent pas le bilan dynamique. La dynamique des tourbillons des fluctuations de basses fréquences se trouve à êtrefortement non linéaire, et l'advection domine le bilan du tourbillon. On discute de l'importance de ces résultats dans la modélisation du déplacement de basse fréquence dans le détroit de Georgia.
