Spatial correlation of marine wind‐speed observations

Abstract

The spatial characteristics of the wind speeds from ships, drilling platforms, and satellites (SASS and SMMR) were investigated through autocorrelation analysis. Values of the spatial correlation coefficient in minimum separation classes revealed that SASS winds contained the least noise, followed by drilling‐platform and SMMR winds, measured ship winds and estimated ship winds. The variances explained by wind‐speed observations within a 100‐km radius of each other were found to be 86, 72, 62, 48 and 41%, respectively. Ship wind‐speed estimates made during hours of darkness showed significantly higher noise than daytime reports.

Résumé

Les caractéristiques spatiales de la vitesse du vent provenant de navires, plates‐formes de forage et de satellites (SASS et SMMR) ont été examinées à l'aide d'analyses d'auto‐corrélation. Les valeurs du coefficient spatial de corrélation dans des classes de séparation minimales montrent que les vents du SASS contenaient le moins de bruits, suivis des vents des plates‐formes, du SMMR, et des navires (mesurés et estimés). Les variances correspondantes expliquées par les observations de la vitesse du vent dans un rayon de 100 km de séparation était de 86, 72, 62, 48 et 41%. Les estimés de la vitesse du vent à bord de navires durant les heures de noirceur indiquaient beaucoup plus de bruit que ceux faits durant le jour.
