When ice melts in sea water: A review

Pages 139-165 | Received 21 Jun 1991, Published online: 19 Nov 2010

Abstract

The development of the knowledge and understanding of the thermodynamics of melting ice in sea water is reviewed with special attention to recent contributions to the literature on the subject. The contributions are dealt with in a chronological order, which also happens to coincide largely with the development of relevant models from the simplest molecular conductive/diffusive to multilayer turbulent models applicable to the melting of drifting ice in the planetary boundary layer.
