Formulations of Lateral Diffusion in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Models

ABSTRACT

We discuss several approaches to the problem of lateral diffusion in geophysical fluid dynamics models. It is shown that the diffusion model should include, in addition to the usual linear or nonlinear formulation involving deformations or iterated Laplacians, a gradient-of-divergence term representing sub-grid scale dynamic pressure effects related to interactions between vortical modes and inertia-gravity modes. General forms of the former terms, valid in particular for stretched-coordinate models, are also presented, as well as primitive equation formulations of the Anticipated Potential Vorticity Method, in entropy or other vertical coordinates.

RÉSUMÉ

On examine plusieurs approches au problème de diffusion horizontale des modèles géophysiques de la dynamique des fluides. On montre que le modèle de diffusion devrait inclure, en plus des formes linéaire et non linéaire impliquant les déformations ou les laplaciens itérés, un terme de gradient de divergence représentant les effets de la pression dynamique inférieurs à la grille associés aux interactions entre les modes de rotation et les modes de inertie-gravité. On présente aussi des formes générales de ces termes, valides, entre autres, pour les modèles aux coordonnées étirées, ainsi que des formes pour les équations primitives de la méthode du tourbillon potential anticipé, dans des coordonnées verticals de l'entropie ou autres.
