EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ELECTRICAL FAULTS AND SWITCHING OPERATIONS ON MAXIMIZATION OF MECHANICAL TORQUES IN LARGE TURBOGENERATOR SETS

ABSTRACT

The shaft torques in large turbogenerator sets, caused by different electrical disturbances and switching operations, are investigated. It is shown that the stress levels can be higher than during conventional terminal short circuits. The trend in shaft-stress values for future highly-utilized generators is illustrated. Influence of electrical and mechanical modelling on the calculation results is studied. A suitable protection concept is outlined.
