ABSTRACT

The study of synchronous generator in transient condition is one of the most important factors underlying its effective designing and working out of reliable protection for it. The present paper formulates a mathematical model, rationally considering the magnetic saturation and eddy current effects during transient conditions. The variation of currents, speed, electromagnetic torque etc, during severe terminal fault are calculated by developing computer program, based on standard technique. Mathematical model is also used to simulate the operation of protection system. This enables one to select optimum characteristics of protection system. The comparison of theoretical results with the experimental ones shows the validity of calculations for transients with high rate of change of alternator variables.
