Abstract
A series of dioxolane-type diphenylmethylene acetals of pyranosides was converted into axial diphenylmethyl ethers in high yield using AlClH2 as the reducing agent. AlH3 did not cleave the acetals, AlCl2H regenerated both hydroxyl groups, and the intermediate diphenylmethyl ethers were also the substrates of this reagent.
