Abstract
The development of the p-nitrophenylethyl (NPE) group for phosphate, phosphite and amide protection as well as the p-nitrophenyleth-oxycarbonyl (NPEOC) group for amino and hydroxy protection offers the first universally applicable blocking groups in nucleoside, nucleotide and oligonucleotide chemistry.
