Notes

This article is an extension of a study on the “birth of the concept of network, territory and engineering corps in Western Europe, 1760–1815,” carried out for the Délégation à la Recherche et à l’ Innovation du Ministère de l'Equipement, and completed in January, 1988. Excerpts from this report appeared in Cahier 5 of the Groupe Réseaux in July 1986, “La rete di distribuzione durante la Restaurazione,” Rassegna, (March 1987), pp. 75–81; “L'émergence du concept de réseau 1820–1830,” Réseaux territoriaux, (Caen, Paradigme, 1988), pp. 33–50; “Paysage et reconnaissance militaire (1780–1804),” Colloque SRETI/ DRI, Révolution, nature, environnement et paysages, (Florae, Nov. 7–9, 1989) Paris, CNRS, 1992; a synthesis was made by G. Dupuy for the article “Réseau” in the Encyclopedia Universalis.
