Abstract
The shift toward evidence-based practices in addictions and behavioral health care is long overdue. For too long practitioners in the behavioral health field have been led by what they think works rather than by evidence-based practices. Fifty percent of chemically dependent clients drop out of treatment prematurely. It is difficult to utilize an evidence-based practice unless clients are engaged in treatment first. This article outlines 15 strategies for engaging difficult-to-reach, multiproblem clients with substance use disorders.
