The Effect of Redox Conditions on the Floatability of Coal

Abstract

The effect of reducing agents on the flotation of steam coal is studied and it is shown that such a treatment may result in significant improvement in coal floatability.

Electrokinetic measurements are used to study coal oxidation. Coal surface oxidation is found to also affect the platinum electrode potential measured in the flotation feed prior to flotation. The tests revealed a relationship between such a redox potential and the floatability of a low-rank coal.
