Two years ago Harriet Pappenheim sent Joe Lichtenberg and me a note that an issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry devoted to clinical examples of unconscious communication would be timely and valuable to stimulate attention to this ubiquitous clinical phenomena. She would be happy to edit an issue. So, this became one of her professional contributions.
She died in the middle of the preparation of the issue. She has been a valuable contributing editor and we miss her greatly. The remainder of this memorandum was written by Harriet herself.
Harriet Pappenheim was a well-known couple, family, and individual therapist who had a private practice for many years, with an additional specialty in family business relationship counseling. She was featured on national radio and in national newspaper articles and appeared on TV shows like Good Morning America and The Today Show. She authored Bringing Home the Bacon (Harper Collins), which was later published in paperback as For Richer or Poorer: Keeping Your Marriage Happy When She’s Making More Money. Harriet was an original founder and director of the Parent’s Center in New York City. She organized, produced, and participated in over 20 professional scientific conferences in New York City and also wrote and presented numerous scientific papers to therapists and other professionals—nationally and internationally—on psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, and couple therapy. She co-edited this psychoanalytic journal and was on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Inquiry.
