ABSTRACT
In this article, clinical examples focus on unconscious communication between patient and analyst which take the form of physical sensations, dreams, temporarily debilitating shared grief, deep immersion in dissociated affect and shared trauma.

Elizabeth Anne Seward, M.S., M.D., has a private practice in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Burlington, Vermont. She is a founding member, supervisor and faculty at the Vermont Institute for the Psychotherapies in Montpelier, Vermont. Prior to retraining as an analyst, she practiced internal medicine.
