ABSTRACT
This paper is a comparative study of the eight index crimes and three composite indexes in five peer cities (Albuquerque, Omaha, Tulsa, Wichita and Des Moines) and the nation. The Uniform Crime Reports from 1973-1993 were utilized, and various calculations were made to reflect the extent of crime over the study period. The data for the nation and the five cities revealed an increase, for most of the index crimes, between 1973 and 1993. The nation's crime rate (the Crime Index and the specific index crimes) for the twenty-one years of this study was usually lower than the five peer cities of this study.
