John F. Maxfield

John F. Maxfield is a self-taught electronic equipment designer turned computer crime detective. For over 20 years he has owned and operated a telephone and electronic equipment repair business. Since 1982 he has been involved in computer intrusion and telephone fraud investigations, first as an undercover FBI informant, and since 1984 as a private consultant. He maintains statistics on the incidence of computer hacking and phone phreaking and monitors underground computer bulletin board systems for evidence of illicit activity nationwide. He has been responsible for the arrest and conviction of several major hacker gangs. He holds a U.S. patent on a telephone trap and trace device.
