Management Systems: Four Options, One Solution

Abstract

Information system programs can do everything from automating routine operational functions to mimicking the thought processes of experts. These systems play an important role in the management of an organization. However, to realize their potential, the MIS manager must understand how they evolved and how they can be integrated into an effective whole.

William J. Bullers

William I. Bullers is associate professor of management information systems at the Anderson Schools of Management, University of New Mexico. His previous industrial experience has included computer operating systems programming, computer operations supervision, and information systems development. Dr Bullers has published more than 15 articles in national and international journals on knowledge-based information systems, data base management systems, and decision support systems for computer-integrated manufacturing.

Richard A. Reid

Richard A. Reid is professor of operations management at the Anderson Schools of Management, University of New Mexico. His research interests center on using concepts from general systems theory to design frameworks for modeling computer-assisted management systems. Dr. Reid has published more than 30 refereed articles in national and international journals and has co-written Competitive Hospitals (Aspen Publishing, 1986).
