Local Area Networks — What About Performance?

Pages 76-79 | Published online: 31 May 2007

Abstract

Local area network (LAN) performance has received relatively little coverage, which is somewhat ironic considering that a primary benefit of LAN use is the vast improvement in performance over the wide area techniques used in traditional data communications. Perhaps the failure to discuss performance occurs because it is assumed that when dizzying speeds like 5, 10, and even 50 MBPS are mentioned, acceptable performance is a given. The decision to incorporate LANs into the business environment must address performance issues to ensure satisfactory operation.
