Factors Influencing the Growth of the MIS Department: A Survey

Abstract

The MIS corporate function has changed dramatically during the past two decades. And because todays business and technological environments are evolving continuously, identifying the attributes that contribute to MIS growth can prove helpful in planning for the future. This article examines the survey results of DP/MIS directors from the second half of the Fortune 1000 industrial companies and discusses their implications for future MIS development.

Farzad Farhoomand

Is an assistant professor of decision sciences and MIS, Concordia University. He holds a BEng degree and an MBA degree and is currently a PhD candidate in MIS at McGill University. He has several years' experience in design and implementation of personal computer systems, has spoken at executive computer training seminars, and has organized and chaired the first and second Canadian Conference on Personal Computing in Business. He has published articles in the American Journal of Small Business and the Journal of Small Business-Canada. He has also presented papers at the American Institute for Decision Science Conference and the World Conference of the International Council For Small Business.

Mark Gatehouse

Holds a BS degree and an MBA degree. He has seven years' experience in financial areas. Currently, he is an analyst at Seagram Ltd, heading a data base implementation project.
