Information Systems: Business Venture or Cost Center?

Abstract

IS budgets have increased to a point at which many IS organizations could be standalone organizations. Viewed in this light, IS should be managed as such. This column describes this budgetary growth pattern, discusses the management implications of this growth, and offers advice on how to manage IS as an independent business venture.
