The Data Consistency Conundrum: Deferred Versus Immediate Checking

Abstract

To protect the referential integrity of their data, users of data base management systems (DBMSs) can select one of two ways to check the consistency of their data bases. This column discusses the advantages of each of these methods–immediate checking and deferred checking – and their importance to referential integrity.

Tony Hatoun is president of lntex Solutions Inc. Needharn MA, which provides DB2 and SQL/DS tools to improve the productivity of the data base adrninistrator. Before founding lntex five years ago, Hatoun was a management consultant for several US and international companies. He received a BS in mathematics and computer science from MIT, Cambridge MA.
