Closed-Architecture Systems

Abstract

Closed-architecture systems are systems for which access to vital software and hardware configuration is restricted. Open-architecture systems allow third-party vendors to develop software or hardware for these systems. This column describes these differences in further detail and argues the disadvantages and risks of purchasing a closed-architecture system.

Alan D. Mazursky is president of ADM Consulting Group in New Rochelle NY. ADM consults on a wide variety of topics related to MIS, including IS strategies, effects of mergers and acquisitions. systems and personnel management. system selection and implementation. executive information systems, and specialized application systems development. Mazursky has written 3 college textbooks and more than 20 articles on information systems strategy, management, and application systems. He received his MBA from the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie-Mellon University and his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
