Methods of Quantifying the Value of Office Automation

Abstract

Office automation (OA) technology is an investment that can provide an organization with both tangible and intangible benefits. To prove the existence of these benefits, MIS managers must evaluate OA's advantages to justify the costs of this technology. This article describes some applications of office automation and offers cost/benefit analysis methods that best quantify their value.

Matthias Schumann

Matthias Schumann is a member of the Betriebswirt-schaftliches Institut of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, West Germany. Schumann holds an MBA from the University of Goettingen, West Germany and a PhD from the University Of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1987, he was a visiting scientist at IBM Corp, Los Angeles Scientific Center. His professional interests include the management of office automation, strategic planning for information systems, information economics, and expert systems for business applications.
