A Two-Dimensional Approach to Systems Development

Abstract

Although many variables can contribute to the failure of a systems development project, the use of the traditional f one-dimensional systems development life cycle approach is often a major factor in the failure of such an effort This article describes an alternative method— the two-dimensional approach to systems development— and discusses why IS managers should consider adopting this new development approach.

Kerry L. Henson

Kerry L. Henson is a PhD student in the department of Business Computer Information Systems at the University of North Texas. where he previously received an MBA degree. He has worked as a programmer/analyst and a director of programming. Henson's areas of interest include human factors of information systems, expert systems, and systems analysis and design.

Cary T. Hughes

Cary T. Hughes is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University. Hughes received his PhD from Arizona State University. His teaching, research, and consulting interests include the analysis, design, development, and management of information systems. He has special interest in the evaluation of training programs for management information systems and decision support systems users. Hughes is a member of SMIS. ACM. DPMA. and the Decision Sciences Institute.
